POTTERY BARN is a home furnishing company that sells all kinds of furniture, including dining room furniture, bedroom furniture, kitchenware and household goods. Williams-Sonoma is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pottery Barn.
San Francisco is the location of the company's headquarters. Pottery Barn also has a number of specialty stores such as Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Teen. There are three retail catalogues for Pottery Barn: the traditional Pottery Barn catalogue, Pottery Barn Bed + Bath and Pottery Barn outdoor furniture.
The Pottery Barn was founded in 1949 by Paul Secon and his brother, Morris. The Secon brothers built their chain up to seven stores after they discovered three barns full of pottery from the factory of Glidden Parker in Alfred, New York. Morris sold his share in the chain to a pair of partners in 1968 and the new owner expanded the chain to 13 stores before selling it to The Gap in 1984.
The company was acquired by another company. The mail-order catalog first came out in 1987. Pottery Barn Kids was launched in 1999 as a premium children's home furnishing and accessories brand.
