Petco was founded in 1957 and is headquartered in San Diego, California. Petco and Unleashed by Petco were formed from a number of acquisitions in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

In January 2017, PetSmart acquired Unleashed by Petco. Petco has more than 12 million customers who shop at its stores. Petco also has over 5.0 million subscribers to its pet-related online content, such as the Company's blog, Petco Answers, and Petco TV.
